Construction and deconstruction, the balance between one’s feminine and masculine nature, of parts to a whole, of manipulation and control, of role-play, of elusiveness, of intellectual, physical and sexual power; it is light and heavy, it is full and empty, it is open and closed, it is contained and free, it is universal and local; essentially, it is the examination of the internal and external recurrent in my work.
Throughout several series the dress form and the sphere are used as the framework for concept. A dress form is a potential power in that it is something constructed, as is each life; how it is constructed is based on choice. The dress and the thread that holds it together can imply fortitude yet vulnerability to circumstance, outside influence, deconstruction, reconstruction, and self-destruction. It can be the façade that is based upon falsehoods, subject to collapse in the face of introspection. In contrast, power can be honed by considered action and thought, creating a sound foundation where true power can take shape. The spheres for me tell a story of a potential power, but a volatile power with an uncertain outcome.
I ask the viewer a visual question: How does one manifest one's power and does it enhance or compromise within/without the self? The asking inevitably crosses gender boundaries.
